The Philippines just received the first live AI-based Weather Forecasting System in the region.
When we signed a Letter of Intent with the Philippine government at last year's APEC summit, witnessed by President Marcos Jr., we made a bold promise: to develop and deploy a next-generation weather forecasting system for the Philippines in record time. Today, just months later, that system is live.
Traditionally, implementing a new national weather forecasting model takes years. But the urgency of the challenge—and the incredible collaboration with our Philippine partners DOST, PAGASA, and ASTI —helped us move faster.
The result is a breakthrough in forecasting resolution: our AI-powered system now delivers weather predictions at 10 times higher resolution than prior forecasts in the region. This means weather patterns can be tracked and predicted at the neighborhood level, a capability that seemed out of reach just a year ago.
Technical specifications only tell part of the story. Our vision is to serve and support the Filipino people through the over 20 typhoons and myriad extreme weather events the country receives annually. With ultraprecision weather forecasts, local governments will be better prepared for severe weather. Farmers will make more informed decisions about planting and harvesting. Growing industries like renewable energy can optimize their production and pricing. Families can plan their days with greater confidence.
This month’s release already marks the second version of our AI4RP (AI for Resilient Philippines) model, and it's just one step in a rapid progression. While many countries rely on one-size-fits-all forecasting models, AI4RP is specifically calibrated for the unique weather patterns of the Philippine archipelago. This specialization makes a difference: the new system has far greater potential to map the intricacies of local weather phenomena in ways that global models simply cannot.
Multiple future versions are already in training, each incorporating more local weather data and real-world observations from across the Philippines. With each iteration, the system's accuracy increases as it learns from the country's actual weather patterns. This continuous improvement cycle, powered by Philippine data, ensures the forecasts become increasingly precise and reliable over time.
We're deeply grateful to our partners who helped make this rapid deployment possible. From the initial discussions at APEC to today's launch, this has been a story of collaboration and shared purpose. While we're proud of the technical achievements, we're most excited about working with local communities to make this technology truly serve their needs.
This is just the beginning. As the system continues to learn and improve with each new version, we look forward to working closely with users across the Philippines to understand how we can make it even more useful for their daily lives.
